By Eleanor Lawrie For Thisismoney. Jamal Edwards has achieved more at the age of 26 than many people can aspire to in a lifetime. Filming his friends rapping and performing helped to channel his enthusiasm for discovering new music, eventually leading to the creation of his media platform SBTV.

Jamal Edwards created SBTV after getting a video camera for his birthday. A decade on, Jamal has been credited with helping to bring artists such as Ed Sheeran and Dizzee Rascal to mainstream attention. While still focused on new music, SBTV has since diversified into interviews with prominent figures such as David Cameron and Prince Charles, and running stages at music festivals such as Bestival and Wireless.

And he is more than happy to share his tips for starting and building a business with others. Jamal often goes into schools to talk to young people about their future. Despite his financial success, he urges them to create a business that means something to them rather than chasing money. He points out that he was working on his media platform for many years before turning a profit or taking on any employees. Don't start your business just for money - or you are going to give up.

Money should not come in to it - you will get paid [eventually]. It took a good few years of doing lots of things. Jamal helping princes William and Harry launch The Queen's Young Leaders Programme in In the few years since he left school, the technological landscape has changed beyond recognition, bringing with it both new opportunities and challenges for new generation of entrepreneurs. When I said I wanted to be an entrepreneur at school, I was told I needed to work in a shop but now when I go into schools people are thinking differently.

I think entrepreneurship needs to be embraced a lot more by schools but I can now see that coming through. His career unexpectedly skyrocketed in after a Google Chrome advert featuring SBTV prompted the phrase 'Jamal Edwards' to be searched for more than a million times.

His success even elicited one marketing agency to coin the phrase 'Jamal Edwards effect,' which means that anyone with enough tenacity can be successful in the digital age.

Not only has technology helped his career, Jamal has harnessed it to help others by making himself approachable on social media. I'll say I'm in Glasgow on [social media platform] Snapchat and they will see that as an opportunity to get in touch. I'm quite easily accessible - people feel like they can come up and talk to me.

That's the internet generation - it's much less formal, and more open. Music is a notoriously tough industry to break into, but Jamal is not the first member of his family to make a success of it. Jamal's mum Brenda came fourth on the second series of the X Factor, and has subsequently made a career performing in Broadway shows.

Despite its huge prevalence in British culture, the entrepreneur says the success of SBTV demonstrates that reality TV is not the only way to find an audience for new musical talent. It's about being relentless and just keeping going - but there is so much out there that you have to punch above your weight.

SBTV has also interviewed leading political figures including former Labour leader Ed Milliband pictured Jamal met Richard Branson after winning a competition, and he has since become a strong business contact. His mum used to work for Virgin, and Jamal says he has always admired the entrepreneurial spirit of the company.

Since SBTV took off, a range for former employer Topman and collaborations with Puma and Burberry have followed, as has a healthy eating cafe called UGOT in Newcastle and York train stations. His next challenge is to expand his SBTV company and take it to America. How do you scale up without compromising your integrity? So I'm going over to the US and scaling up and will be emulating what we have done over here, but it will be 10 times bigger.

SBTV took on private equity to help put in place that infrastructure and also to fund a legal team. But he warns against taking on outside funding too soon.

In 's New Year's Honours list Jamal was awarded an MBE for services to music and this year was named one of Forbes 30 under 30 in European media.

After clocking up a string of achievements, others might take a break - but the entrepreneur says he is still genuinely enthused by his work. It inspires me to keep going and it was a good day for my family to come down and see my work. That was quite a big moment and I was very proud to receive it.
